Márai Sándor, eredeti nevén Márai Grosschmid Sándor Károly Henrik (Kassa, 1900. április 11. – San Diego, Kalifornia, 1989. február 21.) magyar író, költő, újságíró, rövid ideig a Magyar Tudományos Akadémia rendes tagja. Írói stílusát gyakran hasonlítják Thomas Mann, Robert Musil, Joseph Roth és Arthur Schnitzler stílusához. Márai Sándort a 20. századi európai irodalom egyik legkiemelkedőbb alakjának tartják, külföldön és hazájában egyaránt. Műveinek nyugat-európai, különösen olaszországi és franciaországi fogadtatása döntő szerepet játszott abban, hogy hazánkban is elismertté vált. ---------- Sándor Márai, originally known as Sándor Károly Henrik Márai Grosschmid (Kosovo, April 11, 1900 – San Diego, California, February 21, 1989) was a Hungarian writer, poet, journalist, and briefly a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. His writing style is often compared to that of Thomas Mann, Robert Musil, Joseph Roth, and Arthur Schnitzler. Sándor Márai is considered one of the most prominent figures in 20th-century European literature, both abroad and in his homeland. The reception of his works in Western Europe, especially in Italy and France, played a decisive role in his recognition in our country.
